The early web consisted of sites which were only discoverable through internet directories. You would literally visit Yahoo and Excite to see _hand picked_ lists of websites. Most of the internet remained quiet, spacious, and unconnected.
While the eventual Google search engine solved the problem of discovery, it also ushered in the algorithm. The tools built to amplify expression have, paradoxically, made us more self-conscious about expressing anything at all. Instagram isn’t fun anymore; it feels like a series of mental hoops to jump through just to avoid looking like you’re trying too hard. We don’t see into people’s interests the way we used to.
Griffin and I agreed that it would be valuable to have a platform which created quiet corners of the internet again. A space where text and images can breath, outside of the noise of algorithm incentives.
